OTN Canada Students: Jordan Matley

Jordan is an MSc student at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His research is focussed on predator-prey interactions in the Arctic marine environment with emphasis on Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida). Arctic cod aggregate in schools containing millions of individuals, which provide important energy sources for top predators in the Canadian Arctic. Specifically, Jordan studies food web dynamics and foraging behaviour of predators such as seabirds, seals, and whales. He is also interested in the distribution and movement of Arctic cod and other important marine species. Relatively little research has been conducted on Arctic cod despite the fact that it is a critical component of the Arctic ecosystem. Similarly, much is unknown concerning the abundance, movements, and foraging behaviour of top predators. In conjunction with the OTN, he hopes to expand the limited resources available with the overall goal to provide ecosystem managers with thorough and reliable scientific information.

Jordan earned his BSc at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario.
